In Year 2 we continue to build upon the skills that the children have learnt in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 by providing a broad and balanced curriculum, which we design carefully to motivate and engage the children. Lessons are delivered in many engaging and relevant ways and the children have lots of fun learning new things through as many hands-on activities as possible. The Great Fire of London, the Titanic, hot and cold countries, Florence Nightingale, Orla Kiely, stop-motion animation, textiles and E-safety are just a few of the things we learn about in Year 2. Please see the KS1 Curriculum Overview and our half-termly knowledge organisers for more information about what we cover and when.

Throughout the year, we organise many visitors or school trips to enrich our topics. In recent years our visitors have included the Fire Service, a Great Fire of London theatre company and visitors from a local church. We go on school trips too, which range from walking to a local school to watch a Christmas play and going on a local ‘hike’ around Hawley Woods, to taking a coach further afield to places such as G-Live and Beale Park.

In Year 2 our children have weekly music lessons delivered by a specialist music teacher; and a sports coach comes in every week to deliver one of our two PE lessons.

Our Year 2 children are the oldest in the school, so we love to give them responsibilities to prepare them for junior school and develop their self-confidence and independence. In Year 2 your child may help to lead the School Council or be asked to become a Lunchtime Monitor; and we often arrange times when they can read to and play with the younger children in our school. As a Lunchtime Monitor, the children help our lunchtime supervisors and support our Reception children when they eat lunch, as well as look after children on the playground if they need a friend or get hurt.

Useful information:

  • We encourage the children to come into the classroom in the mornings by themselves, so that they can take responsibility for putting their things away and start the day in a calm and settled classroom.
  • In Year 2 the children can change their reading books whenever they need a new one. We encourage them to choose books from the appropriate boxes independently, but we do help them when necessary! Phonics books are allocated by the class teacher and will be changed when appropriate. We would like the children to read at home at least 5 times a week.
  • We have PE on Mondays and Wednesdays, so please send your child into school wearing their PE kits on these days and make sure that earrings are taken out.
